Regulation No. 570/2012 on animal and public health requirements for trade in products within the European Economic Area and the import of products from countries outside the area.

This regulation regulation sets animal and public health requirements for trade within the EEA and imports from non-EEA countries of certain products of animal origin not already covered by specific EU/EEA rules. It requires covered products to come from approved and supervised establishments, with risk-control measures, laboratory testing where necessary, record-keeping, proper labelling, trade documentation and notification duties where risks to animal or human health arise. It prohibits placing on the market products from farms or establishments subject to disease restrictions unless appropriate heat treatment or other safeguards have been applied. For imports, products must generally come from approved third countries or regions, from establishments certified by competent authorities, and be accompanied by animal or public health certificates. The annex lays down product-specific rules for items such as animal casings, bones and horn products, processed animal protein, blood products, lard/rendered fats, rabbit meat and farmed game, including treatment, certification, sampling and salmonella-control requirements. Enforcement is assigned to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority and local health committees, with penalties under food, animal import and animal disease legislation.
