Decree no. 375 of 2016 for the creation of the Identity Register of Mediterranean Fishing and Seaside Villages.

This Decree, in consideration of the importance of the Mediterranean diet, the conservation of fish stocks, the need to increase fishing tourism and fishing methods that respect the environment, in a combination of productivity and sustainable development, provides for the creation of the Identity Register of Mediterranean Fishing and Sea villages, in order to classify and protect local knowledge and traditions related to the fish world, and to enhance the Sicilian fish production, in compliance with UNESCO provisions regarding the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. The Register collects and defines data and information on fish producers and operators, and fishermen; data and surveys on fishing vessels used in Mediterranean fishing activity; data on fishing gears and methods; information on premises related to fish production and transformation; historical data on Mediterranean fishing and marine cultural identity; data on aquaculture and mariculture facilities.
The Decree identifies the competent authorities and defines the composition of the Strategic Steering Group and the coordination units within the Regional Department of Mediterranean Fisheries and concerns the organisation of education activities aiming at providing information on Mediterranean fishing in cooperation with Universities and Environmental Associations.
