Law 31 July 2002, n. 179. Environmental provisions.

This Law increases the authorization of expenditure referred to in article 5 of the law of 2001, n. 93, (relating to the increase in quantity and complexity of the tasks assigned to the Ministry of the Environment), of 630.000 euro per year from the year 2002. The Law also foresees that the number of the Carabinieri dedicated to the environment protection is increased by 220 units of personnel.
The Law provides specific economic measures for the promotion and evaluation of programs relating to the sectors of mobility, electricity generation, renewable sources, energy efficiency and carbon uptake; specific measures in favor of the reduction of polluting emissions in the municipality of Prato; measures for the optimization of procedures and tools for the evaluation and reduction of environmental impact (integrated pollution prevention and reduction, environmental risk assessment of chemicals and genetically modified organisms, development of environmental certification systems).
Economic measures are also foreseen for the implementation of a program of environmental communication aimed at raising public opinion and entrepreneurs awareness on the needs and problems relating to the environment and to promote initiatives for the protection of environmental resources.
The Law further sets specific provisions on the operation of protected marine areas; on the management and interventions in specific geographical national areas (Gran Paradiso National Park, Stelvio national park, Circeo national park, Venice and Chioggia); on the hydric and forestal sectors maintenance of Calabria; on polluted sites; on areas presenting hydrogeological risks; on areas to be reclaimed; on interventions on coastal areas etc.
The Law also sets a special fund for the companies impacted by environmental emergencies.
The Law finally modifies, as perarticle 29, the law 183 of 1989 on the concerning the organizational and functional restructuring of land conservation.
