Legislative Decree No. 196 implementing Directive 2002/59/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a Community vessel traffic monitoring and information system.

In accordance with the rules and principles laid down at the European Union level, this Legislative Decree sets out provisions establishing a vessel traffic monitoring and information system. The aim is to enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime traffic, improve the response of authorities to incidents or potentially dangerous situations at sea and contribute to a better prevention and detection of pollution by ships. Article 3 specifies the vessels to which these provisions apply. Specific provisions concern the notification of hazardous or polluting substances on board. Article 25 sets out penalties.
