Abstract
In compliance with the principles laid down at the national level in Act No. 394 of 1991, the Liguria Region shall set up protected areas for the purposes of conservation and improvement of the natural and environmental heritage. The Liguria Region shall also promote the creation of interregional protected areas. When drafting the Nature Chart referred to in article 3 of Act No. 394, the Region shall provide for the assessment of the environmental conditions taking into particular account vulnerable areas. Regional protected areas are hereby classified into the following categories: (a) regional nature parks; (b) nature reserves; (c) natural monuments or botanic gardens (art. 3). Article 4 defines protected areas of provincial or local interest. Therefore, the regional system of protected areas shall comprise regional protected areas, provincial protected areas and local protected areas. Chapter II is entirely devoted to regional protected areas and makes provisions in matter of setting up and management of such areas. Further details are laid down in Chapter III with respect to the managing entities, their functions and the management of protected areas. The aforesaid entities are in charge of the elaboration and approval (in compliance with the procedure described in article 18) of the Plans of Protected Areas, which represent the essential instrument in the management, improvement and use of the area concerned. Chapter IV lays down rules governing the granting of subsidies intended to support protected areas. Chapter V deals with surveillance and application of penalties. The entities which are in charge of the management of the protected areas shall elaborate annual reports as per article 29. Chapter VII lays down particular provisions to be applied solely to the Regional Nature Park of Portofino.
