Regional law 7 July 2022, n. 23 Rules for the increase, development and enhancement of Calabrian beekeeping.

This Regional disciplines and enhances the practice of beekeeping as an environmental asset. The Region recognizes beekeeping as an agricultural zootechnical activity, even if not related necessarily to the management of the land; it also recognizes the same as a qualitative and quantitative improvement factor of agricultural and forestry production and a tool for enhancing natural ecosystems and biodiversity, recognizing fundamental importance to natural pollination activity.
This Law also establishes that the Region, compatibly with the territorial vocations and respecting biodiversity plant and current legislation, favors the inclusion and maintenance of plant species, including non-native ones, of particular beekeeping interest, in reforestation plans and in interventions for soil defense, in the management of protected areas, in the actions of development of officinal crops, seeds and urban greenery.
The Region also recognizes beekeeping as an activity of cultural and educational interest.
The Law establishes that the regional department responsible for agriculture draws up the regional beekeeping program (PAR), which acknowledges the European Union's orientation aimed at the development of the beekeeping sector, favoring the production and improvement of the quality of honey and other beekeeping products, in compliance with the safeguard of the environment, the protection of beneficial insects and of the consumer's health and in accordance with the national and European interventions. The PAR sets annual intervention programs and identifies their methods of implementation as well as the available incentives.
The Law futher sets rules for the starting-up of beekeeping in an entrepreneurial form or for self-consumption. It also regulates the updating of the National Beekeeping Database and the annual census.
Nectar resources and nomadism also make the object of this Law, which, further, establishes prescriptions, prohibitions and safety regulations inherent to the beekeeping.
A regional beekeeping table is established, with technical-consultative functions on activities related to planning and hygienic-sanitary defense measures for the exercise of beekeeping; on activities related to the defense of bees and pollinating insects from phytosanitary treatments; on the beekeeping needs in matters concerning research, innovation and studies.
Finally, the Law treats the phytosanitary treatments and the protection of bees as well as the promotion and enhancement of beekeeping products.
