Regional Law No. 59/2017 concerning rules for the protection of homeothermic wild fauna, for the protection and planning of wildlife-environmental resources and for hunting.

The purposes of this law are: a) protect wild fauna throughout the regional territory, through the establishment and management of protection zones, with specific reference to those areas located along the migration routes of avifauna or which present suitable habitat to encourage the natural increase in wildlife and stopping, primarily of the species listed in Annex 1 of Directive 2009/147/EC, according to the ornithological criteria provided for in Article 4 of the same Directive; b) plan, for the purposes of correct wildlife-hunting management, a rational use of the entire Apulian agro-forestry-pastoral territory; c) regulate hunting so as not to conflict with the need to conserve wildlife and not cause actual damage to agricultural production; d) safeguard agricultural production needs through the regulation of hunting activity and effective control of wild fauna; e) create, improve and/or restore environments that present specific naturalistic and ecological-environmental interest, with particular reference to wetlands; f) take the necessary measures to maintain or adapt populations of resident wild fauna and all bird species referred to in Article 1 of Directive 2009/147/EC, at a level corresponding to ecological, scientific, tourism and cultural, taking into account economic and recreational needs; g) promote and adopt studies and investigations of faunal-environmental interest, with particular regard to the development of knowledge of the faunal heritage and the ways for its protection; h) enhance the recreational, cultural and tourist aspects connected to hunting and amateur breeding, as long as they are capable of promoting an optimal relationship between man-environment-territory; i) ensure with constant vigilance the protection of water, air and land from pollution, in order to eliminate or reduce the factors of imbalance or environmental degradation in agro-forestry lands and allow a greater presence of wild fauna on the entire regional territory
