Abstract
This Act establishes the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management as a body corporate, defines its functions and powers and provides in general for preparedness for disasters. The principal objects of the Office shall be to advance disaster preparedness and emergency management measures in Jamaica by facilitating and coordinating the development and implementation of integrated disaster management systems.
The Office shall enhance and supervise preparedness at a national level and in economic sectors for all emergency situations, develop a National Disaster Plan, advise the Minister and carry out all other tasks assigned to it under this Act. The Prime Minister may, on report of the Office, declare specified areas of Jamaica to be a disaster area and may direct for that area the enforcement of measures recommended by the Office. The Act assigns regulation-making powers to the Minister.
