Abstract
This Policy provides for conservation and sustainable use of Jamaica's orchid population, moving from the consideration that land clearing and harvesting of forest products for timber has lead to the alteration and destruction of orchid's habitat. The Policy identifies gaps and issues in conservation and sustainable use of orchids, including illegal harvesting, lack of an inventory of species, and of an export quota. The Policy details the following objectives with related actions and strategic directions: 1) conservation of Jamaica's orchid species and their habitats; 2) ensuring sustainable use of orchids; 3) promoting and facilitating research and training; 4) improving public education and awareness.
