Abstract
This Act shall apply to any vessel used in navigation registered in Jamaica and to foreign ships in Jamaican waters except where otherwise provided (sect. 4). A Maritime Authority is established as a body corporate under section 6. The interpretation section includes a definition of "fishing vessel". Sections 16 to 101 provide for registration of ships and, in the case of small vessels, licensing and for related matters, including survey of ships and marking. Sections 217 to 226 provide for official logbooks and ordinary ship's log. A Maritime Tribunal is constituted under section 411. (465 sections divided into 18 Parts and completed by 2 Schedules)

An Act to make better provision in respect of the regulation of merchant shipping generally; and more particularly in respect of the registration of ships, the employment and certification of seafarers, the safety of shipping; to significantly consolidate the law relating thereto, and to make better provision for matters connected therewith.
