Abstract
The (2018-2021) Jordanian National Action Plan (JONAP) for advancing the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (UNSCR 1325) is a nationwide sectoral document, in line with Jordan’s commitments to promote and respect human rights, justice, equality, and participation, which aims to (i) integrate a gender-based approach towards women’s participation in prevention and protection processes during conflicts, as well as in peacebuilding, and maintaining stability and sustainable security; (ii) highlight the importance of cooperation with civil society and the role of women as key partners in preventing and combating extremisms; (iii) reiterate the importance of engaging men and boys as partners in promoting women’s participation in the prevention and resolution of armed conflicts. Furthermore, by endorsing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - and Goal 5 and its targets in particular - Jordan provides a means to ensure the inclusion and participation of all segments of society for the fair and efficient implementation of comprehensive and sustainable development.
The JONAP sets out the following four key Strategic Goals (1) achieve gender-responsiveness and meaningful participation of women in the security sector and peace operations; (2) achieve the meaningful participation of women in preventing radicalization and violent extremism and in national and regional peacebuilding; (3) ensure the availability of gender-sensitive humanitarian services (including psychological, social, legal, and medical services) that are safely accessible by Jordanians and refugees (including those women and girls most vulnerable to violence and in need of protection, in host communities and refugee camps in Jordan), in complete alignment with the Jordanian Response Plan for the Syrian Crisis; (4) foster a community culture that recognizes gender-specific needs, the importance of gender equality and the role of women (including young women) in peace and security.
