Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to establish the basic principles of shokuiku (food and nutrition education); to clarify the respective responsibilities of the national government, local governments, and other organs; to advance measures regarding shokuiku comprehensively and systematically by providing for basic matters for the measures.
The Act focuses on promoting food and nutrition education to enhance the health and well-being of citizens. It sets up the food and nutrition education principles, including promotion of the citizens' physical and mental health and cultivation of humanity; consideration for traditional food culture and environmentally friendly food production; and contribution to vitalizing rural areas whose economy is based on agriculture, forestry or fisheries, and improving self-sufficiency rate. The Council for the Promotion of Shokuiku shall be established in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The Council shall develop the Basic Plan for the Promotion of Shokuiku to advance measures for the promotion of shokuiku (food and nutrition education) comprehensively and systematically. Articles 19 to 25 set up basic policies of shokuiku (food and nutrition education) .
The Act highlights the need for citizens to adopt healthy dietary habits by raising awareness about food and nutrition, expressing gratitude for nature's blessings, and making informed decisions based on reliable information. It calls for a national movement to promote food education in various settings such as homes, schools, and communities.
Additionally, the Act encourages interactions between food producers and consumers to ensure food safety, promote the effective use of food resources, and deepen understanding of food and nutrition. It supports activities to pass down Japan's traditional food culture, provide information on food safety and nutrition, and conduct research on dietary habits.
