Abstract
Japan’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) sets climate targets aligned with the Paris Agreement and the global 1.5°C goal. It commits to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by FY2035 and 73% by FY2040 from FY2013 levels, aiming for net zero by 2050. These economy-wide targets cover all sectors and gases, including CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, and fluorinated gases, and apply to Energy, Industry, Agriculture, Waste, and Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF).
Japan’s implementation plan emphasizes transparency, public participation, and gender equality in decision-making. It incorporates IPCC methodologies and promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon technologies. International cooperation through mechanisms like the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and initiatives such as the Asia Zero Emission Community will support global emission reductions.
