Abstract
The Kenya National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) is a cross-sectoral plan with national coverage which entered into force in 2000 for a five-year period. It is Kenya’s response to its international commitment under the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). The NBSAP seeks to conserve Kenya’s biodiversity, to sustainably use its components, to fairly and equitably share the benefits arising from utilization of biodiversity resources among all stakeholder, and to enhance technical and scientific cooperation nationally and internally, including the exchange of information in support of biodiversity conservation. SSO 1 Help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition – The NBSAP will strengthen the conservation and sustainable utilization of agricultural biodiversity for food and agriculture.
The NBSAP will seek to undertake immediate biodiversity assessment measures that are necessary pre-requisite for the implementation of the national strategy and action plan; to act on the decisions of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD; to gather, consolidate, and disseminate biodiversity information; to create an enabling legal and policy environment for biodiversity conservation; to strengthen institutional and community capacity for sustainable conservation of biodiversity, including the safe utilization of biotechnology; to incorporate biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity resources into national development planning; and to alleviate the social, cultural and economic impediments to biodiversity conservation and the sustainable utilization of its resources.
The NBSAP will take measures to reduce the impacts of poverty on biodiversity; and design and implement economically and socially sound incentive measures for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The NBSAP will seek to conserve agricultural biodiversity thought increased support to local communities in the production and sustainable utilization of indigenous and or traditional species for food and other ruses. In addition, the NBSAP will seek to strengthen institutional and community capacity and linkages; promote gender equity in biodiversity management; and support and promote the utilization of indigenous knowledge, innovations and practices.
The NBSAP will seek to strengthen pollution control measures and conduct impact assessments; and develop and implement the National Clearing House Mechanism. Governance – The NBSAP designates the various actions to specific governmental and non-governmental stakeholder for their implementation with clear time-frames.
