Kenya Postharvest Management Strategy for Food Loss and Waste Reduction 2024-2028.

This Postharvest Management Strategy for Food Loss and Waste Reduction provides for achieving the realisation of food and nutrition security in sustainable food systems, by ensuring prudent and judicious use of production resources, land, water, energy, labour and production inputs. The Strategy outlines the measures of Kenya's government to implement postharvest management and food loss and waste reduction, and to improve food and nutrition security and livelihoods for Kenyans. The Strategy moves from the consideration that postharvest losses and food waste have negative implications on the economy, environment, and the society, as they worse food insecurity situation, limit efficiency of value chain development services, reduce institutional capacity. Therefore, the Strategy improves the agrifood systems sector to enhance its contribution to agriculture and economic transformation and focuses on three strategic pillars that guide interventions towards better post-harvest management and ultimately contribute to food loss and waste reduction: 1) knowledge, skills, and tools for primary food management; 2) value chain development services; 3) food waste management initiatives. The Strategy also promotes partnerships and innovation, increases investment for sustainable and efficient post-harvest management and food loss and waste reduction strategies.
The overall strategic goal of the Strategy is the improvement of food and nutrition security and livelihoods through 50 percent food loss and waste reduction by 2028. The Strategy identifies targeted areas of intervention, with specific measures and actions: redistribution, reuse and recycling of food; developing capacity building; promoting public and private financing and investment.
