Abstract
This Machakos County Water Policy represents the county Government of Machakos's commitment to ensuring the achievement of the constitutional right to water, and to improving protection and conservation of ecosystem services and water resources in the County. This Policy also takes into account obligations of the County regarding regional and international arrangements related to water resources management and the environment, such as trans-boundary or shared water sources. The Policy defines the following goals and objectives: achieving sustainable water availability; ensuring equitable supply of quality water in adequate amount to all water consumers; improving the water services coverage to water users, through Water Resource User Associations; providing guidance to sustainable provision of water services for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes, in order to ensure the conservation of environment and combat negative effects of climatic change for sustainable development. Matters covered in this Policy include: water sources and supply, including: rivers, streams, wetlands, springs, ground water, and rainwater sources; safe water usage; waste water disposal; investments in water resources management and distribution; water use charges and tariffs; efficient irrigation operations; flood control.
