Abstract
This Management Plan, made by the Director-General of the Kenya Fisheries Service, in compliance with the provisions of section 39 (2) of the Fisheries Management and Development Act, provides for: ensuring long-term biological sustainability and ecological integrity of the marine aquarium fishery; improving social and economic benefits from marine aquarium fishery to the local community, County and National governments; improving governance of the marine aquarium fishery. The Management Plan defines the following terms: aquarium fish dealer; aquarium fish; catch per unit effort; closed area; closed season; coral; ecosystem approach to fisheries; fishing ground, as marine fishery waters open for collection of aquarium fish; harvest strategy; invertebrates; precautionary approach; total allowable catch. The Plan applies to live fish and invertebrates traded for display in tanks and public aquaria. The Plan specifies: the geographical area covered by the Plan; fishing methods and fishing grounds; management approach and management strategy, including prohibited activities; education and capacity building; research and monitoring; financing provisions; offences in case of contraventions to the provisions of the Plan.
