Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour) Regulations, Legal Notice no. 90 of 2024.

These Regulations, made under provisions of section 450 (1)(f) of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2009, provide for: the certification of seafarers; defining minimum requirements for seafarers to work on board ships; specifying standards for the conditions of service for seafarers, inspection of crew accommodation, recreation facilities and catering; specifying standards for health preventive measures, medical care, welfare and social protection for seafarers; handling complaints and enforcement procedures as prescribed under the Act. The Regulations concern: declaration of maritime labour compliance and related certification; maritime labour certificate and related inspection; minimum age for seafarers; prohibition of worst form of child labour; training and qualifications; specific measures relating to young persons and children; conditions of service and crew agreements; accommodation and recreational facilities for the crew; sanitary facilities; food and catering standards, including: adequate supply of clean drinking water, adequate supply of food having regard to the number of seafarers on board and their religious and cultural practices, respect of hygienic conditions; social security and social protection measures; medical care standards; health and safety protection and accident prevention; protecting any seafarers exposed to sounds or vibration, in order to prevent noise pollution.
