Abstract
This Act, divided into eight Parts, provides for: the development, promotion and regulation of the organic food industry; the establishment of the agroecology development and marketing board; the enhancement of agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycle and soil biological activity; improving the uptake of organic farming and organic products; training and educating the residents of Murang’a County on the benefits of organic farming and quality control mechanisms; ensuring that organic produce of the county meets the food quality standards of international markets; integrating organic production courses and farming units in technical training institutes across the county; encouraging research and partnership in natural pesticides and herbicides development.
The Act applies to all crops, livestock and aquaculture and any other agricultural produce and products emanating from agroecology, grown, processed or marketed in Murang’a County and imported to or exported from Murang’a County. The Act concerns the following matters: establishment, functions and powers of the Agroecology Development and Marketing Board; role of county government in allocation for organic agriculture; promotion of organic agriculture; improvement of agricultural practices; use of public land for organic farming; licensing and registration provisions; certification of national organic standards; packing, processing and storage of export organic produce; sustainable agricultural practices; food safety and quality assurance; packaging and storage of food.
