National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy.

This National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy develops, in line with the provisions of the Kenya Vision 2030, the types of mechanisation in the country including the use of animal-drawn and motorised machinery, implements and equipment, in order to increase the area under agricultural production. The objective of this Policy is to sustainably raise the level of agricultural mechanisation in order to increase productivity and income of agricultural producers, and food and nutrition security, through training, research programmes and technology development, local manufacture and distribution, agricultural mechanisation quality assurance, investments in mechanisation services, extension and improved institutional and legal frameworks. Specific objectives of this Policy include: enhancing access and distribution of agricultural machinery, equipment, agro-structures, agro-processing facilities and mechanisation services; increasing quality assurance for agricultural machinery, equipment, agro-structures, agro-processing facilities and mechanisation services; promoting investment in agricultural mechanisation; strengthening mechanisation research, technology development and adoption along agricultural value chain; increasing adoption of agricultural mechanisation technologies for sustainable agricultural land development and climate smart agriculture; developing mechanisation technologies, in order to meet the interests of people with special needs and support local initiatives.
The Policy follows this structure: 1) overview of agricultural mechanisation; development of agricultural mechanisation in Kenya including: agricultural mechanisation services, agricultural mechanisation units, farm equipment use in small holder agriculture projects, mechanisation and soil conservation, climate smart agriculture programmes, incubation of small and medium enterprises in agricultural mechanisation; 2) analysis of issues in agricultural mechanisation, including: quality assurance programme, investment in mechanisation, improvement of human resource capacity, environmental conservation and sustainable land development, cross cutting issues and gender considerations in agricultural mechanisation; 3) Policy objectives and interventions; 4) Policy implementation.
