National Strategic Plan for the implementation of One-Health in Kenya 2012-2017.

This National Strategic Plan defines efforts of ministries, experts, international human and animal health agencies, non-governmental actors to address zoonotic, emerging and re-emerging diseases and work collaboratively, in order to better prevent and control these diseases. The Strategic Plan provides for implementing the One Health approach, and its vision consists in improving the well-being of humans and animals in Kenya by eliminating zoonotic diseases, and improving capacity to respond to epidemics of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The five year Strategic Plan, covering the period 2012-2017, focuses on three objectives: establishment of structures and partnerships to promote One Health approach in the country; strengthening surveillance, prevention, and control of zoonoses in both humans and animals; conduction of applied research at the human-animal-ecosystem interface, in order to better understand the mechanisms of zoonotic pathogen maintenance and transmission to humans.
The National Plan follows this structure: introduction; overview of zoonotic diseases in the country; evolution of One Health approach; situational analysis; burden of zoonotic diseases; zoonoses surveillance in both humans and animals, including wildlife; international health Regulations; vision, mission and goals of the Plan; objectives and implementation of the Plan. The expected outcomes of this Strategic Plan include: compliance with international organisation guidelines on public health emergencies of international concern; development of risk maps and identification of hotspots for zoonotic diseases; establishment of zoonotic diseases database; implementing diseases prevention and control strategies for zoonoses, capacity for early epidemic detection, diagnosis and response, through the proper use of vaccines; better understanding of socio-economic impacts of zoonotic diseases.
