Practice Manual for Small Dams, Pans and other Water Conservation Structures in Kenya - 2° edition.

This Practice Manual provides the required information to support proper planning, design and construction of safe, economically viable and environmentally friendly small dams and pans, and water storage structure, therefore it is intended for general application on sites where the structures are within the boundaries of the limitations for small dams, in order to improve the use of water for domestic, livestock, irrigation and other commercial purposes. This Document covers aspects of project planning, stakeholder engagement, legal and environmental compliance, and catchment conservation in addition to the technical material on design and construction of the water conservation structures.
This Practice Manual, divided into twenty chapters, concerns the following matters: issues related to the planning and management of any type of water storage project; policy and legal framework for water storage development; stakeholder consultation and engagement; environmental and social impact assessment processes; erosion control and catchment conservation measures; estimation of flood flows, rainfall analysis and hydrology data; site surveys and investigations; reconnaissance survey as an essential part of the project development process; feasibility study; design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of small earth embankment dams, mass gravity dams, pans and lagoons, sand dams, subsurface dams, rock catchment dams, ancillary structures.
