Range Management and Pastoralism Strategy 2021-2031.

This Range Management and Pastoralism Strategy (RMPS) 2021–2031 addresses critical challenges in the country's rangelands, particularly in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, thus providing a comprehensive framework for sustainable utilisation and management of Kenya's rangelands. The Strategy provides decisions in land use, planning and investments, in order to ensure sustainable development in the rangelands of Kenya, with a clear roadmap of resource exploitation and management, and the application of pastoral indigenous knowledge, consistent with range resources and environment preservation, conservation and management. The main objective of the Strategy focuses on strengthening institutions to develop sustainable interventions, mitigation and adaptation measures that preserve, protect and sustain the rangelands productivity. Specific strategic objectives include: 1) improving rangeland health to ensure sustainable productivity; 2) revitalising pastoral production systems to enhance resilience; 3) mainstreaming climate change adaptation and mitigation measures for better resource management; 4) increasing marketing of rangeland resources and enterprise development for improving livelihoods; 5) exploring alternative sustainable exploitation of alternative rangeland resources for improved livelihoods; 6) strengthening governance frameworks to ensure effective coordination between stakeholders at national, county, and community levels.
Targeted measures and actions developed in chapter three include: sustainable resources utilisation through: rehabilitation of degraded rangelands using proven technologies, development of water infrastructure to address fluctuating availability, promotion of drought-resilient fodder crops and grazing management practices; establishment and functions of the Range Management Directorate: monitoring rangeland health indicator, supporting research initiatives on rangeland productivity and biodiversity conservation, coordinating initiatives across national and county governments; monitoring and evaluation framework.
