Abstract
This Siaya County Youth in Agribusiness Strategy (SYAS, 2020) shows the County’s commitment in multi- dimensional approaches and initiatives to address the challenges currently facing youth people in the agribusiness space, based on the consideration that the County’s economy is rural based, but the capacity of young people to effectively and profitably engage in the sector is restricted, because they are in vulnerable employment positions. Therefore, the Strategy aims at creating a supportive social, cultural, economic and political environment that will improve youth participation in the Siaya County economic development. The Strategy focuses on youth employment prospects in agriculture sector, prioritising the following value chains enterprises: poultry, pigs, fish, beekeeping and vegetables, in order to improve agricultural growth and transformation and thus identifies the following areas of youth involvement: fish processing; hatchery; trade; net knitting and repairing; supply of feeds and ingredients; poultry production and veterinary services; pest and disease management services; supply of pesticides in fruits and vegetables sector; dairy production; fodder production; feed formulation; fabrication of bee management equipment; honey processing.
Strategic issues concerns and related interventions concern: limited access to financial services; limited access to land for agribusiness; inadequate skills, knowledge and information of young people; limited uptake of agricultural innovations and technologies; alcohol and drug abuse, diseases, gender disparities, cultural barriers.
