Decision No. 520 of the Cabinet of Ministers “On issues of registration and granting the right to use a geographical indication or appellation of origin of a product.”

This Decision establishes that upon state registration of a geographical indication or appellation of origin of goods, supporting documents or, accordingly, shall be submitted to the competent authority a conclusion that: (a) within the boundaries of the geographical object submitted for registration as a geographical indication, a certain quality, reputation and/or other characteristics of the product are largely determined by its geographical origin; and (b) within the boundaries of the geographical object submitted for registration as an appellation of origin of goods, the applicant produces goods, the special properties of which are solely determined by the natural conditions and/or human factors characteristic of this geographical object. Supporting documents or expert opinions shall be issued by authorized state body in the field of agriculture - in relation to agricultural products and foodstuffs; by the authorized state body exercising state control in the field of production and circulation of ethyl alcohol, alcoholic and alcohol-containing products - in relation to alcoholic and alcohol-containing products; and by local government authorities of the relevant territory - confirmation that the applicant is located and carries out production activities (one or more stages of production) on the territory of the geographical object declared as a geographical indication.
