Abstract
This Law provides for the protection of national cultural heritage and cultural property in general against illegal destruction, modification, alteration, excavation, alienation, exportation or importation. The Law consists of 3 Chapters divided into 67 articles.
This law shall apply to movable and immovable cultural property, whether publicly or privately owned, whose protection is in the public interest. Protected sites containing archaeological reserves shall be established (art. 6). Classification of public or private cultural property, which has already been inventoried and whose protection is in the public interest from a scientific, historical, artistic or religious point of view, shall be made by the competent authority (arts. 7-27). Articles 28-36 deal with rights of expropriation and trade in antiquities. It shall be prohibited to carry out excavations or surveys, on land or under water, without the prior authorization of the competent authority (arts. 40-50). The export or import of any cultural object from Cambodia shall be prohibited as provided for in articles 51-61. The remaining articles deal with penal provisions.
