Abstract
The purpose of the Deep Bottom Snapper (DBS) Management Plan is to ensure optimal utilization of deep bottom fish resources by commercial and artisanal fishers on a sustainable basis, while providing opportunities to augment economic returns, contributing to food security, and guaranteeing sustainability of the deep bottom snapper resources for present and future generations. This Plan lays down actions as regards the management of the deep bottom snapper resources; conservation and protection measures, such as: seasonal fishing closures and restricted fishing areas; and fishing rights.
The objectives of sustainable management are laid down as follows: (I) to establish an effective and practical management system for the commercial deep bottom fishery; (II) to establish an ecologically sustainable DBS fishery based on sustainable fishing practices that will ensure an effective management of the DBS industry; (III) to help improve the economic well-being of local communities participating in the DBS fishing industry; (IV) to strengthen data collection mechanism to assist in decision-making to refine and improve the management of DBS fishing industry; (V) to monitor and control the marketing and shipment of DBS species to overseas market.
