Abstract
Kiribati Climate Change Policy is a national policy with a multi-sectoral approach. The goal of this Policy is to increase the resilience of Kiribati against the impacts of climate change and related disaster risks by addressing the challenges posed by climate change and disaster risks in a holistic manner.
Climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction will be integrated into national policies at national and local level with an emphasis on coastal protection and infrastructure, water security, food security, health, environment, disaster risk management, energy security, capacity building and education, climate finance, and the adverse impacts of climate change. Institutional capacity will be strengthened for the effective implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation and disaster risk preparedness, response and recovery strategies in an equitable, inclusive, gender-sensitive, community-driven and participatory manner. The environmental, social and economic resilience of the communities will be increased against the adverse impacts of climate change and disasters. Long-term measures will be taken to manage, monitor and protect coastal areas and communities will be engaged in becoming active partners in building coastal resilience and reducing hazards and risks related to climate change. Technical capacities of various key sectors will be developed to improve local food production and address food and nutrition security. In addition, food preservation and storage techniques will be improved to avoid food shortages and increase food availability through use of both modern and traditional skills and knowledge. The resilience of livelihoods will be strengthened through environmental protection by coping with biodiversity loss and habitat degradation, invasive alien species, coastal erosion, contamination and pollution, unsustainable practices in terrestrial and marine areas, and decreased quality and quantity of freshwater resources. Water conservation measures will be strengthened for climate change adaptation and mitigation, to sustain water availability, quality and quantity. Public awareness will be raised on climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction. The participation of all stakeholders will be encouraged including non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, the private sector, and faith-based organizations.
The Office of President shall be responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the Climate Change Policy and all other climate change relevant aspects of sector policies that support and enhance climate change adaptation and mitigation, in collaboration with the implementing agencies.
