Phoenix Islands Protected Area Management Plan 2010-2014.

The long-term objectives of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) Management Plan are to: (i) conserve and manage representative marine and terrestrial ecosystems to ensure their long-term viability and genetic diversity; (ii) protect depleted, threatened, rare, and endangered species, including critical habitats essential to their survival; (iii) conserve areas integral to the life cycles of economically significant species, including tuna; (iv) prevent activities that may adversely affect the ecological integrity of PIPA; (v) safeguard and manage cultural, historical, and natural heritage values; (vi) promote the understanding and interpretation of ecosystems for conservation, education, and tourism purposes; (vii) regulate and accommodate compatible multiple-use activities, including sustainable fishing, environmentally responsible tourism, and sustainable development, consistent with conservation objectives; (viii) support research, training, and environmental monitoring, including the impacts of human activities; and (ix) ensure that all activities within PIPA are consistent with applicable conservation agreements entered into by the Minister with Cabinet approval for its long-term protection and sustainable use. The PIPA Strategic Action Plan (SAP) Framework has been developed to implement the long term PIPA management objectives. The SAP Framework addresses climate change, offshore fisheries, biosecurity, coral reefs and coastal management, among others.
