Abstract
This National Energy Policy clarifies the position of the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis regarding the nation’s energy development, in order to establish a transition towards sustainable energy activities and services, and better address international climate change mitigation and adaptation issues, through an integrated approach that reflects the best interests of the country’s economy, social well-being and environment with regards to energy sources, supply, conversion, use and export. The Policy is based on the principle that energy services must become cleaner, more reliable and affordable, through the increased utilisation of renewable energy technologies, the synchronisation of adequate knowledge capacity and awareness. The objectives of the Policy concern: ensuring a transparent, inclusive and informed decision-making process regarding energy sector challenges and opportunities; an adequate institutional framework with clearly defined allocation of legal authority to departments, units for managing energy sector; granting international funding and technical assistance for the energy development strategy; promoting research, development and exploitation of new and renewable energy resources; reliable and affordable supplies, handling, storage and use of fuels and petroleum products; facilitating the removal of waste oil and other petroleum by-products, in order to minimise the adverse impacts on soil, ground-water, and near-shore fisheries.
