Radiation Safety and Security Act, no. 8 of 2024.

This Act, divided into twelve parts and consisting of 69 sections, apply to all activities, facilities and practices involving the peaceful use of ionising radiation in Saint Christopher and Nevis, and to non-ionising sources of radiation used in medical facilities, in security scanning devices and for any other lawful purpose, to ensure that the operating environment for these sources has adequate shielding when a device is in operation and will be amenable to regulatory control under this Act. The Act aims at: establishing a framework to protect the health and safety of people and protect the environment from the harmful effects of ionising or non-ionising radiation and to allow for the beneficial and peaceful uses of ionising radiation and its applications; providing for the adequate protection of people and the environment, against the harmful effects of ionising radiation and for the safety and security of radiation sources; enabling Saint Christopher and Nevis to meet its obligations relating to radiation protection, safety, security, and nuclear non-proliferation, agreed under international instruments entered into by Saint Christopher and Nevis, in particular the IAEA Safeguards Agreement; establishing and maintaining the Bureau with sufficient independence and to effectively perform the functions and responsibilities set out in this Act. The Act covers the following matters: prohibition of ionising radiation; restrictions on importation of radioactive material; notification of proposed activity and licensing; establishment of Bureau of Radiation Safety and Security; appointment of inspectors and their duties and powers; applicable principles for radiation protection and safety; enforcement and penalties; national emergency preparedness and response plan; nuclear security and physical protection; security measures for radioactive sources; radioactive waste management policy and management of radioactive waste; exportation of radioactive waste; implementation of safeguard agreement.
