Abstract
National Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Management Plan (2021-2025) is a comprehensive plan for the management of antimicrobial resistance in South Korea. The Plan is a joint effort across various government departments and outlines a strategic approach to combat the growing issue of AMR, which poses a significant threat to public health, animal health, and the environment.
The vision of the Plan is to achieve sustainable health for the nation by managing AMR in humans, animals, and the environment. Key objectives include the appropriate use of antibiotics to reduce the prevalence of resistant bacteria, enhancing surveillance systems to monitor antibiotic use and resistance patterns, and implementing active infection control measures to prevent the spread of resistant strains.
Five main areas of focus are: appropriate use of antimicrobials, prevention of resistance spread, strengthening surveillance systems, expanding research and development, and activating collaboration mechanisms for antimicrobial resistance management. The Plan proposes the specific actions to be taken in each of the five focus areas, including the introduction of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) in medical facilities, strengthening infection prevention and control, and enhancing surveillance systems. The Plan seeks to address the appropriate use of antimicrobials in animal production and the food chain, emphasizing the need for a One Health approach. It emphasizes the importance of research and development (R&D) in combating AMR, with goals to develop rapid diagnostic tools and new treatment strategies. It also highlights the need for collaboration among various stakeholders, including international organizations, to strengthen the global response to AMR.
