Abstract
This Regulation, comprising 14 articles, aims to (i) promote public health and reduce obesity among students by fostering a safe, healthy food environment in both public and private Kuwaiti schools; (ii) ensure that school meals are nutritionally balanced, safe, and aligned with public health goals for children. It permits only foods that meet nutritional standards for children and adolescents, while prohibiting items that contribute to weight gain or could be harmful to their health (Article 12). Approved food items adhere to healthy school nutrition standards, providing essential food groups fortified with vitamins and minerals, and containing low levels of sugar and salt. The Regulation further addresses the following (i) Health Permits: Requirements for authorization to operate; (ii) Food Sales Locations: Food may only be sold within designated school canteens; (iii) Canteen Standards: Specifications for canteen location, building requirements, temperature control, ventilation, and hygiene facilities; (iv) Canteen Worker Regulations: Guidelines for staff qualifications and hygiene practices; (v) Food Transportation: Protocols for safe transport of food to canteens; (vi) Storage and Conservation: Standards for food storage and preservation. Food Registration: Including nutrient labeling requirements; (vii) Approved Food List: A list of permitted foods for serving; (viii) Allergy Safety: Measures to ensure safe food options for students with allergies; (ix) Authority Consent: Requirements for approval of certain foods and restrictions on banned items.
