Abstract
This updated and enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution, following the Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to the objectives of the Paris Agreement intends to report on the progress of the country’s contribution to the objectives of the Paris Agreement, in order to strengthen Lao PDR’s response to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, through mitigation and adaptation measures in all the relevant sectors affected by the threat of climate change. Concerning mitigation measures, this Contribution provides for: a summary of the scenario analysis; estimated targets for 2030 and towards net zero emissions 2050.
The adaptation measures focus on the long-term adaptation objectives in key sectors: increasing forest conservation measures, sustainable management of forests; reducing deforestation and forest degradation; improvement of water management practices in lowland rice cultivation; implementation of sustainable municipal solid waste management projects; promoting appropriate technologies for climate change adaptation in agriculture, including circular economy solutions; improvement of integrated land use planning; strengthening water resource information systems; increasing groundwater, surface waters and wetlands management; development of early warning systems in water resources management; increase the resilience of public health infrastructure and water supply systems; improvement of hydropower sector with dam safety guidelines; promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency; use of biomass and biofuels in public transport and for domestic generation of electricity.
