Abstract
This Lebanon’s Economy for Sustainable Development is a nationwide multi-sectoral document directed to transform Lebanon's economy from a rentier economy affected by external influences to a specialized and integrated economy (industry, agriculture, services), that can produce high-quality competitive goods, built on industry and agriculture sectors. Therefore, governmental policies focus on supporting the high-added-value productive sectors and disseminating specialization principles and integration of production to achieve sustainable development goals that lead to fighting poverty and unemployment and achieving economic prosperity. The Ministry Vision envisages attaining sustainable economic development and integration with the world economy through the following integrated and interdependent fundamental pillars (i) Human Development, by creating the conditions for a sensible improvement in the field of Education, at all levels, Media, and Culture that disseminates a culture of citizenship and sense of belonging; (ii) Social Development that includes social protection, health services and care, Crisis and Disaster Management, and Human Rights; (iii) Economic Development, regarding all the concerned sectors, in particular the industrial one, the Competitiveness of national products, the Green industry, the development of SMEs, Exports Promotion, Tourism Sector, Investment Sector, the work sector, electricity, and transport sectors, the financial sector, and urban planning; (iv) Environmental Development; and (v) Good Governance.
As far as environmental development is concerned, the document touches all the following sectors (i) the water, with the aim to improve coverage and ensure the continuity of water supply, ensure the cleanliness and sustainability of water from all sources and limit wasting of water, optimize the use of energies of rivers water and groundwater for drinking, irrigation, land restoration and power generation; (ii) the agriculture, through, among other measures, the development of agricultural roads and irrigation systems, veterinary and plant quarantine centers in all border posts, improving the controls on agricultural products safety in the Lebanese markets to make them complying with domestic and external standards and requirements of the market, the adoption of agricultural traceability and labeling, rationalizing of the use of agricultural pesticides and fertilizers, reducing soil pollution and desertification, conserving biodiversity and ecosystems (forests, pastures, water, fisheries etc.); (iii) the environment by reducing the use of harmful chemicals materials, increasing the cultivation of trees in empty areas, improving the waste disposal methods and organization, and preserving the environment and protecting natural sites; and (iv) the livestock sector by activating and developing agricultural researches, expanding natural reserves, encouraging the establishment of farms, imposing the traceability system for farm animals and the production of meat, milk and its derivatives, and regulating and updating the laws governing fishing and hunting.
As for Governance, it is mainly focused on security, as concerns economy, industry, finance, food, investment, planning, and the Nation preserving the right of every citizen to enjoy security, safety, responsible freedom, and a promising future.
