Abstract
This National Fisheries Plan represents the response of St Lucia government's to the challenge of ensuring the sustainable use of its natural resources in the context of both ecosystem protection and support of the long term interests of fishery industry, through the development of actions that maximise sustainable economic, financial and social benefits. The vision of this National Fisheries Plan is the following: supporting strong partnerships between civil society, private sector and public sector, in order to advance a sustainably governed fisheries sector that will enhance profitability and contribute to food security. The long-term objective of the Plan is: fostering medium to long term economic prosperity in the fisheries sector through the promotion of sustainable fisheries and effective fishing techniques that will result in fishers and fish farmers meeting and in the maximisation of the potential long term economic value of the available aquatic resources to the people of the country. The Fisheries Plan includes the following objectives: institutional strengthening; improving stakeholders input into the decision making process; increasing the average incomes of fish catchers; strengthening fisheries management; aquaculture improvement; increasing marketing solutions to promote an increase in the value of caught and farmed fish products. The Plan also focuses on cross-cutting issues involving the fisheries sector, including: tourism; gender; climate change.
