Abstract
Saint Lucia adopted the National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants so as to ensure the protection of human health and the environment from negative effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The NIP is integrated into government’s environmental policies and sustainable development strategies.
Saint Lucia’s national objectives for implementing this Plan include: (a) to eliminate the importation and use of Annex A POPs pesticides; (b) to eliminate the importation and use of PCBs and equipment containing PCB, and dispose of PCBs and such equipment; (c) to reduce or eliminate releases from unintentional production of PCBs; (d) to identify and manage contaminated sites; (e) to increase awareness of the public on POPs and chemicals; (f) to promote capacity for research and development related to the management of POPs pesticides and chemicals. These national priorities are established under the NIP: (1) institutional strengthening for POPs and chemicals management; (2) overall awareness raising on chemicals management issues including hazardous and chemical waste; (3) assessment of hazardous risk associated with existing stockpiles; (4) development of specific legislation on sound management on chemicals and hazardous waste.
