Abstract
This Marine Litter Management Action Plan provides for reducing the impacts of marine litter on marine ecosystems and human health, by promoting the effective control of all sources of marine pollution. This goal is pursued through the following objectives: strengthening the enabling policy, regulatory and institutional frameworks for waste management; promoting waste minimisation, recovery and recycling and diversion from the landfill; removing leaked plastic and other waste from the environment, including the coastal areas, through clean up campaigns; increasing behavioural change towards waste management through education and awareness. The Action Plan defines the following activities in order to implement its objectives: development of a waste management strategy; assessing economical, environmental and social aspect of waste recovery; data collection management and analysis; development of guidelines and standards for improving waste minimisation at hotels and commercial establishments; development and implementation of a waste management plan for the fisheries sector including the return of damaged gears; promoting annual coastal cleanup activities; increasing international cooperation with regional and international partners in waste management; development of an environmental education programme focused on driving behavioural change towards waste management, plastic pollution and marine litter.
