Abstract
This Third Nationally Determined Contribution represents the government of Saint Lucia's commitment to update its 2030 greenhouse gas mitigation target and submit a new target for 2035 for reducing emissions in the energy and transport sector. According to the Contribution, the country aims at further reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the energy and transport sectors by 22% in 2035, through enhanced deployment of renewable energy sources with battery storage, upgrades to the grid infrastructure, continued efforts to improve energy efficiency, and enhanced uptake of electric vehicles. Furthermore, the Contribution adds a quantified target for the forestry sector, and for reducing emissions of ozone depleting substances. The Contribution also intends to add geothermal energy generation to the country's renewable energy mix by around 2035. Considering the heightened vulnerability to climate-related disasters of the country, the Contribution analyses loss and damages and the impacts of climate change on the most vulnerable groups, including children and youth, and promotes gender equality in mainstreaming climate actions.
Concerning adaptation measures, the Contribution provides support to the eight key sectors identified as priorities for adaptation action in the country: water resources management; agriculture; fisheries; natural resources management; infrastructure and spatial planning; health, education, and tourism. Targeted measures include: reforestation programmes for increasing watershed restoration and reducing flood risks; sustainable land-use practices; increasing the adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices to reduce soil erosion, through agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and the use of drought-tolerant crop varieties; restoration and protection of marine ecosystem, improving sustainable fisheries management and promoting sustainable aquaculture.
