Abstract
The Updated Nationally Determined Contributions is a national policy covering the period between 2020 and 2030. The overall aim of this policy is to reduce 7% greenhouse gas emissions in the electricity generation and transportation sectors by 2030. This NDC sets targets which are continuation and expansion of efforts listed in the first NDC to meet the targets for 2025 and 2030.
This NDC lays down adaptation and mitigation targets as response to climate change. The priority sectors for adaptation action include water, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and resilient ecosystems. Energy efficiency will be improved within the water sector through the introduction of renewable energy technologies into the operations of the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. Water pollution will be reduced with a special emphasis on wastewater and manure management in pig farms. The capacity of fishers and other actors will be enhanced to manage climate risks through improved data management and Early Warning Systems. The resilience of agriculture sector will be increased to cope with the impacts of climate change. Climate-smart agricultural practices will be facilitated. Vulnerable groups in subsistence farming communities will be transformed into competitive national agribusiness leaders. The resilient ecosystems will be ensured by improving beach management and coastal erosion control. The ecological and livelihood resilience will be built in Saint Lucia through the establishment of the Iyanola Park Biosphere Reserve. The shoreline stabilization technologies in selected vulnerable coastal areas will be evaluated. Ecosystem restoration and management will be enabled for climate resilient buildings. Climate resilience will be increased and livelihood opportunities will be enhanced through improved forest management. The conservation of mangroves will be strengthened to strengthen the country’s climate resilience.
This NDC sets out mitigation co-benefits resulting from adaptation actions primarily within the agriculture, fisheries and water sectors and resilient ecosystems. Better practices in agricultural production will be developed and implemented to achieve carbon sequestration. Emissions from implementing fuel efficient technologies for aquaculture and fishing operations will be reduced. Emissions from wastewater management will be reduced and renewable energy technologies will be introduced in the water sector. Emissions from implementing resilient ecosystem activities to better manage the available ecosystem services and resources, will be reduced.
