Abstract
The Director of Irrigation is responsible for the preparation of a scheme for the efficient protection of flood areas (to be so declared by Order published in the Official Gazette) and of a statement of the estimated cost of the necessary works. The scheme together with the statement and other related documents shall remain open for the inspection of any person concerned. The Minister, after considering the scheme with all the objections thereto may make an order (a) confirming, altering or rejecting such scheme; (b) altering or extending the limits of the flood area; (c) directing works to be carried out for the protection and drainage of the area; (d) changing the position of any thoroughfare passing through such area or any portion thereof. In every flood area there shall be a flood authority, which shall maintain in good order dams, draining trenches, outfalls, sluices, locks and other works as required for the protection of the area.
Further provisions of the Ordinance concern the appointment of inspecting officers, the re-payment of cost of executing works, the defraying of cost of maintaining works, the criteria for determining the amount of flood rate and the levying of such rate.
