Abstract
This Act amends several provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 52 of 1971. Amendments deal with administrative and legal proceedings of the above mentioned principal enactment, by repealing, modifying and substituting several parts of the original text. The main amendments deal with the following sectors: cargo and passengers' navigation requirements; offences and penalties for illegal activities with related fines; definition of "port" or place in and or outside Sri Lanka territory; "new ship" as the keel of which is laid, or which is at a similar stage of construction; control of ships when in a port of Sri Lanka; certificate requirements issued in accordance with the Convention; Prohibition on ships sailing without a related certificate; etc.
