Abstract
This Policy describes the importance of wetlands not only as a national heritage but as an important ecosystem services provider. The Policy outlines principles for management, conservation and restoration of the wetlands based on international conventions and relevant national policies with reference to sustainable use, polluter pays, precautionary principle, and knowledge requirement on values and benefits of wetlands. The objectives of this Policy are protection and conservation of wetland ecosystems; prevention illegal utilization of wetlands; restoration and maintaining the biological diversity; enhancing ecosystem services; assuring sustainable use of wetlands and traditional practices by local communities; and meeting national commitments as a signatory to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The Policy is designed in 6 parts and contains tables on strategies and action under the National Policy on Wetlands.
