Abstract
This document contains policies and strategies for protection, conservation and management of watersheds in Sri Lanka. It lays down the rationale and principles of the Policy. The objective includes conservation, protection, rehabilitation, sustainable use of watersheds and securing a system of integrated management. The Policy requires classification of watersheds as strictly protected watersheds and protected watersheds. It restricts development of undeveloped, steep and sensitive lands situated above 1500m sea level and agricultural practices must be as per the relevant laws and policies mentioned therein. The Policy promotes community management and private sector participation. It recommends evaluation of the services provided by watersheds including environmental costs and benefits and giving incentives for rehabilitation, protection and management of watersheds. It further lays down the policies on coordination, integrated management, research and training. The Policy further lays down specific strategies under each of the aspects discussed above.
