Abstract
Forest represents one of the major Lithuanian natural resources serving for the welfare of the state and its citizens, preserving the stability of the landscape and environment quality. Despite the forest ownership form, forest, primarily, is the national property that shall be preserved for the future generations at the same meeting ecological, economic and social needs of the society. Being a source of supply with timber and other forest products, forest is the essential factor of the ecological balance providing living places for numerous animal and plant species, stopping the soil erosion, absorbing the carbon dioxide and purifying the air, protecting the ground and the surface waters, providing opportunities for recreation of the urban and rural people. The Regulation consists of 8 Chapters. Chapter 1 lays down the general provisions. Chapter 2 determines forestry policy forming principles. Chapter 3 establishes guidelines of the forestry policy. Chapter 4 contains analysis of the forestry sector. Chapter 5 gives the overall picture of the Lithuanian forests. Chapter 6 determines the functions of the state in the field of forest management. Chapter 7 establishes strategic forestry development objectives. Chapter 8 regards implementation of the strategic forestry development objectives.
