Abstract
The entire territory of Latvia is considered a rural territory, except for the capital and regional territorial units - cities with a population of over 5,000.
Rural Development Program establishes that support for afforestation will be available only with strict restrictions, i.e. a maximum area of 10 ha per beneficiary is set, and only agricultural land with a fertility of less than 25 points (this condition does not apply to small areas of up to 2 ha), or land subject to erosion, partially overgrown agricultural land, scrubland and agricultural land on peat soils will be afforested.
The objectives of the Program include: (a) improvement of the competitiveness of primary producers by better integrating them into the agri-food chain, using quality schemes, adding value to agricultural commodities, promoting sales in local markets and using short supply chains, producer groups and organizations and interdisciplinary organizations; (b) supporting investments in agricultural holdings for the purpose of improving equipment; (c) support of food processing enterprises, in particular milk processing enterprises; (d) allocation a separate funding for small and medium-sized farms within the framework of the measure "Investments in tangible assets"; (e) improvement of agricultural soil quality; (f) promotion of knowledge transfer and innovations in agriculture, in forestry and rural areas; and (g) promotion of social inclusiveness, poverty mitigation and economic development of rural areas.
