Abstract
This Directive No. 2/2019 of Myanmar’s Central Committee for Consumer Protection is formulated to implement section 43 of the Consumer Protection Law, and to make Burmese labeling obligatory for goods manufactured and sold in the country or imported into the country.
The following items are required to be labeled in Burmese or both in Burmese and other languages: 1.Name of the goods; 2.Size, quantity, and weight; 3.Directions for use; 4.Storage and preservation instructions; 5.Allergy information; 6.Information on side effects; 7.Safety precautions. The major categories of target products include: Food products; Household appliances; Children’s products; Communication devices; Pharmaceuticals and supplements; Hygiene products; etc.
As for the Burmese labeling, the necessary labeling based on the product type and size shall be displayed on the packaging materials of the products to be retailed to consumers. If the information cannot be displayed on a product, an information manual or instruction manual on the product shall be provided to the consumer along with the product. In the case of goods imported from outside the country, preparation to meet the above labeling requirements (labeling or use of new packaging) shall be done before placing the goods on the market.
