Abstract
The aims of this Law are to ensure that food is safe and suitable for human consumption, to supervise the production of controlled food, and to control and regulate the production, import, export, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of food. The Law consists of 12 Chapters divided into 38 sections.
A Myanmar Food and Drug Board of Authority shall be established in order to carry out measures relating to food (Chapters III and IV). The Government department or organization shall be authorized to issue licences for the production of food (Chapter V). The Township Food and Drug Supervisory Committee may pass a temporary or permanent prohibitory punishment to any individual who violates any condition of the licence issued, and the Government department may revoke or cancel the licence (Chapters VI and VII). Chapter VIII deals with matters related to quality assurance, labelling and advertisement. Chapters IX and X provide for responsibilities of food inspectors and for acts prohibited in the distribution and sale of food. The remaining Chapters contain offences and penalties, and provisions of miscellaneous nature.
