Abstract
Excessive salt intake is a leading risk factor for high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke, and stomach cancer, leading to premature death for millions of people. The goal of this Strategy is to reduce the population's daily salt intake by 30 percent from 2011 levels by 2025.
Strategic objectives shall be as follows: (a) create a legal environment to support the import, production, trade, service, and consumption of low-salt foods; (b) promote public-private partnerships to reduce salt content in food and improve salt control in food imports, production, and consumer consumption; and (c) reduce salt consumption by creating an environment for acquiring knowledge and practices for choosing the correct food and using salt appropriately.
The following activities will be implemented within the framework of the first objective of creating a legal environment to support the import, production, trade, service, and consumption of low-salt foods and foods: (a) review and update food standards, technical requirements, and recipe technologies, and incorporate the issue of reducing salt content in public catering into relevant standards; (b) include in relevant legislation restrictions on the production, import, trade and advertising of foods and beverages high in salt; (c) conduct annual national surveys on salt consumption; and (d) support food production enterprises in regularizing domestic controls on salt content in foodstuffs.
