Abstract
These regulations amend the Calves (Protection) Regulations, ("the principal regulations").
In particular, sub-regulation (3) of regulation 1 of the principal regulations, concerning their scope of transposing Council Directive 2008/119/EC of 18 December 2008 laying down minimum standards for the protection of calves is amended.
Regulation 2 is renumbered and and the definitions it contains are reworded and some are added. A new sub-regulation (2) is added concerning the interpretation concerning the terms and expressions used in these regulations which are not defined herein.
Regulation 3 of the principal regulations concerning the confination of calf is amended.
Regulation 6 of the principal regulations is substituted by a new regulation providing that in the territory of Malta, inspections and reporting are to be carried out in accordance with the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2017/625.
Regulation 8 of the principal regulations is substituted by a new regulation concerning on-the-spot inspections by European Commission experts.
Immediately after sub-regulation (3) of regulation 9 a new sub-regulation provides that the provisions of article 47 of the Act shall apply whenever the Director has reasonable cause to believe that an offence against these regulations has been committed.
